Hand Frame knitted by knitters in their own homes and finished by hand by skilled finishers in their own homes throughout Shetland.

These are special garments. It takes a great deal of time and skill to create one of these.

Hand frame knitting is the process of knitting a jumper on hand operated knitting machine.  It is knitted circularly so there are no seams.  The neck and cuffs are sewn on by hand and the body rib is hand sewn up the sides.

Nowadays this is a niche skill and yet used to be a source of income for nearly every household in Shetland with women, men and children getting involved.  People grew up with their mothers and fathers knitting on machines and they themselves would help.

Made using 100% Shetland wool sourced from Jamiesons Spinning Mill 40 miles up the road.
